Stockholm - Swedish King Carl Gustaf is to pay a state visit to Italy along with Queen Silvia in March, the royal palace and Swedish foreign ministry said Wednesday. The royals were to be accompanied by Foreign Minister Carl Bildt and a delegation of Swedish business leaders.

Swedish King Carl Gustaf was criticized Friday for saying that he supported culling the wolf population. “We have to cull the wolf population, otherwise it will explode,” the moanrch told Swedish television news during a moose hunt on Thursday.

“They eat a lot, that is a fact,” the king added.

The tradition has been established by King Ocar II who began the tradition of holding the royal elk hunt in Vanersborg, and hunting rights are still held by the Swedish king. Perpetuating the tradition, King Carl Gustav XVI of Sweden went elk hunting with his son who managed to take down one elk.

The stock market downturn is punishing Swedish shareholders, whose shares have tumbled in value in just the last few months. 

But while average losses per shareholder have now reached the 10,000 kronor ($1,400) mark, the outlook for King Carl XVI Gustav is considerably gloomier. 

In September alone, his share portfolio dropped in value by 10 million kronor, according to the Aftonbladet newspaper.

The king’s financial affairs are confidential, but according to Bengt Telland, who manages the king’s finances, his majesty’s 100 million kronor portfolio has shrunk by around 12 percent, reflecting average losses for the stock market as a whole.
