LONDON – Britons generally agree – or say they do – that being racist is bad and that making racist remarks is wrong. But there is no national consensus on what that means, exactly.

Poor old Prince Harry. Chelsy Davy has given him the boot, another excruciating gaffe recently hit the front pages, and even his very own charity, Sentebale, seems to be strangely uncharitable. Mark Hollingsworth unravels a regrettable tale of palace politics and misdemeanours.

When Prince Harry discovered last year that the charity he founded had given just £84,000 to help AIDS orphans in Africa – despite raising £1.15 million – he was enraged. Just three years previously he had been so touched by the plight of abandoned and HIV-infected children at an orphanage in the impoverished state of Lesotho in South Africa that he set up the charity Sentebale. He poured his heart and soul into the project and raised vast sums from sales of his ITV documentary The Forgotten Kingdom, polo events, the star-studded Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium and public donations.

Daily Star – November 10, 2008 – By Joseph Ingram.

PRINCES William and Harry raised just £1,500 on a charity motorbike ride – and set taxpayers back £30,000.

Daily Mail – November 7, 2008 – By Rebecca English.

THE head of Prince Harry’s charity for Aids orphans in Africa is leaving his post, the Mail can reveal.

Geoffrey Matthews will quit Clarence House shortly before Christmas with friends insisting that the situation is ‘as amicable as these things can be’.

Former Irish Guards officer Mr Matthews was brought in from the City to be a ‘project manager’ on a rumoured six-figure salary less than two years ago and was seen as a key member of William and Harry’s private office.

One of his roles is chief executive of Sentebale, the charity set up by Harry in his mother’s memory to help the poverty-stricken kingdom of Lesotho. He was also responsible for organising last summer’s Diana memorial concert.

Sources say that Mr Matthews is a ‘casualty’ of Prince William’s unexpected decision to leave the Army and become an RAF Search and Rescue pilot in January rather than full-time working member of the royal family as previously planned.
